A (Sourdough) Bread Making Day

My husband is a cook and one of his favorite things to do is go the the website all recipes.com. I must admit not my favorite site, until now! My son purchased a loaf of Sourdough bread for us one day while doing a little shopping for me, that we just loved. So, we decided we should try and make our own. We found this recipe for  Sourdough starter

After sitting on our counter for eight days this is what it looked like after stirring, sorry I didn't take a picture before, it was separated with a light brownish liquid on top, not the prettiest, but with a little stirring it looked like this. The recipe tells you what to make and store your starter in and also what to stir it with.  It was very simple and took no time at all to make.

Now you are ready to make bread! The recipe we used is also from all recipes.com. It is the called San Francisco Sourdough Bread.

Very simple, just a matter of adding the starter and the dry ingredients and following  the recipe. It yielded two beautiful loaves. These loaves have a little olive oil rubbed on the top to make them nice and pretty.

When you have taken out enough starter for your batch of bread you are making just add more of the ingredients in the recipe and start all over again. This is what is sitting on our counter this morning....

You can see the liquid I was talking about. It says to keep it covered and with a pan or something underneath, just in case it runs over. We used a large canning jar that was large enough so it did not run over, that would not have been very fun cleaning up. After a few days we will be able to keep it in the refrigerator instead of out on the counter. In just a day or two our starter will be ready to bake more bread if we want. We bought whole wheat flour to substitute for some of the white flour and we are also planning on rolling our loaves in whole oats next time for a variation. The bread my son bought from the grocery store had wheat in it and was coated in oats and we really like the additional flavor. It will be fun to experiment with different ingredients.

If you decide to make this recipe I would love to hear about it. Also, if you change ingredients and come up with your own flavors that would be fun to hear also.

I don't know what is happening to me, but yesterday I spent the day making homemade soup. That was an all day experience. I did not even get to any sewing. I was downstairs watching the pot of homemade stock simmering away. I think that may be a tiny drawback of having my sewing room upstairs. Hmm.... maybe I just haven't gotten back into sewing after our little vacation. I will be telling you about that soon. I also have some pictures from there too.

After baking bread on Sunday and soup cooking all day yesterday we had homemade soup and homemade Sourdough bread for dinner. It was very yummy!! I guess I am giving in to the fact that Fall is coming, I really love Summer but I am ready to move forward now.

What have you been doing lately? Getting your children back to school, shopping for school clothes and supplies? I remember those days, even though we home schooled we went school clothes shopping, bought lots of school supplies, notebooks, back packs and plenty of fun things for lunches.  Maybe taking an end of the Summer vacation? We saw a lot of travelers when we ventured out to Leesburg  and visited a wonderful vintage shop called "Old Lucketts Store", how lucky are we, it is just about an hour and a half away from us. So much fun!! Or are you busy sewing??? Let me know I would love to hear about it!

Now that I have said it, I think it is time for me to get busy with all the sewing I have been putting off! I have quite a list and it keeps growing daily!! Enjoy your day!

Have You Seen...

Pinterest?
I've been busy with the party preparations for Silas' birthday {I am hoping to have a few more things done tomorrow!}, so instead, I'd like to share with a new site I stumbled upon while browsing lovely blogs: Pinterest.  It is a virtual pinboard that allows you to collect images all over the web and curate your own boards.  While I don't pin lots of things {yet}, I really enjoy browsing others' pins and boards, and am slowly adding to mine.  So, if you're interested, head over and request an invite {it's still in beta testing}.  You'll be hooked, I promise!

Sidetracked

We went on a little quilt shop adventure yesterday.  My mom. Silas and I all piled in her car, set the TomTom to a {sort of} nearby quilt shop, and began our journey.  At our first stop I picked up these adorable fat quarters of Cloud 9 My Happy Garden.  I just couldn't resist those lovely blues, greens, and yellows, top it off with birdies and I was sold!

We ventured on from there to another quilt shop, not quite an hour down the road, and from there, while we were on our way home, my wheeles started turning.  I suddenly realized we weren't that far from Charlottesville...and another quilt shop we had wanted to visit!  My mom turned the car around and we continued down the road.  Not only was it a great quilt shop, guess what was across the street?

Anthropologie!  Talk about irrisitable.  We wandered around and looked at everything, even Silas enjoyed the displays {how could he not?}.  However, when we got back in the car we realized we were over two hours from home.  Oops...that wasn't really the plan.

Fortunately, Silas was ready for a nap and did really well on the drive home.  Who knew getting a little sidetracked would have such fun results?  I guess I should let my mom drive more often!

So Good: Tomato & Mozzarella Pasta

This dish is a regular on our dinner table.  It is fresh and light, we usually have the ingredients on hand.  It would also make a great side dish, hot or cold.  And if you're looking for something easy on a hot summer night, this is an excellent choice.  Enjoy!

16 oz Farfalle (Bow Tie) Pasta
2 TBS Extra Virgin Olive Oil
1 Yellow Onion (optional)
4 Garlic Cloves
2 TBS Dried Basil
Salt & Pepper to taste
5-6 Roma Tomatoes
16 oz Fresh Mozzarella Cheese

Bring water to a boil and add pasta. While water boils and pasta cooks, mince garlic and chop onion. Heat oil in a large non-stick pan, add onion and garlic. Sauté until onions are translucent, add basil, salt and pepper. Add chopped roma tomatoes, cook for 3-5 minutes, so tomatoes are soft but still retain their shape. Pour pasta and tomato mixture into a large bowl and stir gently. Add cubed fresh mozzarella cheese. Serves 6-8.

So Good: Ramen Chicken Salad

I wish I could say that we ate a varied diet, but instead we have a few regulars, one of them being this Ramen Chicken Salad.  I got the recipe from a friend of mine in college, and have modified it a bit, mostly the dressing.  I didn't make it for years because it didn't seem to be the kind of meal Josiah would like, but it turned out to be an easy favorite.  We usually eat it as dinner, but it makes a great side or potluck dish too.

Ingredients:

2 Boneless Chicken Breasts
2 Tbs Canola Oil
1 package Oriental Flavor Ramen, crunched
2/3 cup Almonds, sliced
1 package Coleslaw
1/4 cup Green Onions

Dressing:

1 package Ramen Seasoning
2 1/2 Tbs Sugar
3 1/2 Tbs Rice Vineger
2/3 cup Canola Oil

Cook chicken breasts and shred into bite size pieces, set aside.  Heat oil over in a pan over medium heat, add crunched Ramen an sliced almonds. Cook until golden brown, stirring constantly.  Remove from heat.  In a large bowl mix coleslaw, green onions, chicken, and Ramen mix, set aside.  In a separate bowl wisk together Ramen seasoning, sugar, and vinegar, add Canola Oil.  Pour over coleslaw mix and toss thoroughly.

Delicious

I can only drink so much water, but I happened to discover a new love for fruit juice and sparkling water. If you've never tried it, you should, what a nice, refreshing way to get some liquids!

Taco Salad: Update

Oops, I forgot the cheese!  Add a little shredded cheddar cheese on top of the ground beef, it will make it even better (now I'm going to have to try it that way).

So Good: Nana's Taco Salad

We've all had it, that taco salad with mean, lettuce, tomatoes, cheese, beans, salad dressing, and chips. However, we've got a different version for you today. This one is easier {and better, we think} and made like the {authentic} tacos we grew up with. So, enjoy a little bit of our Mexican heritage, and give this a try.

Ingredients {serves 5-6}:

1 lb. Ground Beef
2 - 14.5 oz cans Whole Tomatoes
Garlic Salt
Oregano
Shredded Lettuce
Tortilla Chips

Brown ground beef with about 2 tbs. oregano and 1 tsp. garlic salt,

Crush the whole tomatoes,
stir in about 2 tbs. oregano and 1 tsp. garlic salt, heat thoroughly,
crush up chips to cover bottom of bowl,
add some ground beef,
shredded lettuce,
and finally some of our fresh tomato sauce.
If you give this a try, we doubt you'll go back to {that other} taco salad the way you made it before. Enjoy!

So Good: Smoothies

Smoothies are so refreshing on a summer evening. We like to try all kinds of combinations, but one of our recent favorites is a strawberry, blueberry, mango smoothie. Here's an almost-recipe:

Equal parts fresh blueberries, strawberries {halved or quartered}, and mango sorbet,

Pour in about 8 oz mango mix juice {orange wouldn't be bad either},

Blend until smooth {add more juice if necessary, to obtain preferred consistency},

Enjoy!
