Stashing...

Well, I don't have too many sewing things to post {but I'm still working on my embroidery!}, with getting settled, enjoying the 4th with some new friends, and hanging out with an adorable little boy. But, in unpacking the things from the car, I found my latest fabric purchase and thought I'd share. My husband grew up in a very small town, but there is a fabric shop there with amazing prices.  So, I picked up a half yard of a few basic looking prints.  I'm working on building a bit of a stash so I can better mix and match my own prints, instead of just using whole lines.

My question to all of you, what incraments do you buy stash fabric in?  Fat quarters?  Half yards?  Yards?  More?

  1. I love making bags and FQ quilts so I buy FQs but also a lot of half yard cuts, which I then can cut into 2 FQs. If there is a fabric I really like, then I might buy 2-3 yds. Then are basics, like black and white that I buy in larger quantities.

  2. Have a good 'stash', but when filling in colors I like to buy FQ's. They are also a good way to get an 'eye' of a fabric line too before buying yardage.

  3. I stash anything from FQs to full yards to scrap bags. :)

  4. Honestly, the only reason I buy FQs is when I'm putting together a gift of fabrics for someone I know loves them.
I rarely buy less than a yard of fabric, if it's "just because I want that" fabric. If I really like it, and I have the $$, I will buy as much as I can afford!

  5. @quiltzyx
p.s. I do have one room in my house that my sisters dubbed "The Fabric Shoppe" and I haven't ever bought all the fabrics in a line.

  6. For me it depends how much I like something. If I really like it I buy a yard and if I just like it I buy a half yard. Welcome to California!

  7. I buy fat quarters to add to my stash usually, unless I am buying a line of fabric for a future project. Then I buy enough for backing, borders and binding.

  8. Depending how much I like the fabrics, but I usually buy half meter and fat quarter to add to my stash.

For back, binding and border I buy more.

  9. Glad your settling in, and found some time to play with fabric...even if it's just fondling :)

I prefer to by at least 1 yrd at a time. I HATE designing a pattern, and then finding out I don't have enough fabric that I had chosen for it. LOL

  10. I do a lot of scrappy projects, so I have mostly FQs. I buy a yard or more if I am doing backing or binding. I'm also a poor college student, so I just buy what I can =P I WISH I had more money to buy fabric!

  11. I'm pretty mucha fat quarter girl, but I should purchase halves. Borders are always tough, because I lack bigger quantities, But I sort of grown to use the Lynda Hall method and use scrappy borders.

  12. Lately I haven't been buying much fabric except for what I need for a project. BUT, I do prefer fat quarters. Sometimes, I might get 2 yards or more of something in solids. Once in a while, I will buy more if it looks good for backing.

  13. For me it depends on what I think I might use it for. If I think it might make a good backing or border I buy 3-6 yards, if it is a filler or blender 1-2 yards, if I just really like the fabric but don't know what I will do with it 2-4 yards. I only buy FQs if they are part of a bundle. I rarely buy anything under a yard.

  15. My traveling fabric salesman's remnant table is all half-yards so I have tons of those. When I buy "real" fabric from a "real" fabric store, I usually buy a yard of the pretty stuff that tickles my fancy and I just can't live without.
