Old is New Again

Sometimes it amazes me that my mom and I are so much on the same page, even if we don't chat about it.  Last week I snapped a couple pictures of an older quilt I made, thinking I'd  share it with you, and then my mom shared her first sewing machine...so, now it seems fitting that I share this quilt:

I made this quilt the very first year I was married.  I had decided to decorate our room in blue and white {nevermind the yellow walls and curtains...this is a rental house!}.  I later changed the color scheme to reds, and this quilt got packed away {I've also always been a bit disappointed that I didn't add another row of the blocks, instead I just added borders, those were my early quilting days and the pattern was for a double bed.  I now dream of chopping the extra borders off, rebinding it, and using it on the spare bed}.

This quilt resurfaced not that long ago, when a certain little boy got my cream, thrifted quilt dirty right before bedtime.  Now I have the itch to make a new quilt for my bed.  I've probably mentioned this before, but I have a fat quarter bundle of Simple Abundance by Bonnie & Camille for Moda {here's the other quilt I made with my layer cake!}.  Every time Josiah sees the fabric or the other quilt he mentions how much he likes it.  Since it's a favorite for me too, it seems destined for our bedroom.

So, the question remains...what pattern should I use?  For the longest time I've thought I would design my own, but I realize now that is not going to happen any time soon...so if I actually want to sleep under this quilt in the near future, I'd better just choose a pattern.

Here are my requirements: not super girly, nice and simple, the pattern should be queen size already, and I don't mind adding quite a bit of neutral/cream to the fabric, as the line is a little on the darker side already.  Any suggestions?

  1. Hi Jennie. :o)
Your blue and white quilt is beautiful! Isn't it fun to see what we have created in the past? I really like the pattern you chose. :o)
As for a new bed quilt, my king sized quilt is made with 5" squares of my favorite fabrics (reds, blues, yellows), and I just love it. I also really love my spin cycle, neither are "girly" and are fun to make, and look at.
I can't wait to see what you decide.
    Have a nice day. Trish

  2. I'm no help...I find that THE hardest part of the quilt making process - deciding on a pattern! Once that's been sorted, there's no stopping me! Good luck with your decision! I look forward to seeing what you come up with! I love seeing people's first quilts, and how our skills have grown and our taste has changed!

  3. I think when in doubt go for a Log Cabin or even better, a Crazy Log Cabin. They are always fun to make and look great. Vicki vickilorraine at hotmail dot com

  4. Jennie, I like the log cabin idea, you have made a really cute log cabin quilt already! By the way I should show my beautiful quilt you made for daddy and I, too!! Love you!

  5. Your blue quilt is so pretty!
Log Cabin is always in style. I also love simple nine patch squares made "checkerboard" style with sashing between. I love that simple look. But you are probably drawn to certain "looks" yourself. You will not go wrong if you use colors you love and a pattern that's fun for you!

  6. Hi Jennie! Since you are going to use Bonnie and Camille's fabric, I would pick Swoon! I think it is already sized for a queen bed??? Can't wait to see what you make!

  7. Hi Jennie! I love your older quilt. :)

As to your new one, I'm not the best person to ask about patterns since I've never used one for a quilt. I do, however, love chevron quilts and sawtooth star quilts. Neither are too girly (especially the chevrons) and might look good with your fabric. Good luck and be sure to tell us what you decide to do! :)

  8. Giant hsts are my go to for quick and easy. They give you the light/dark contrast that log cabins do....with fewer seams so less fabric is required...and less time.

This was quick to sew (all squares and only a few triangles) and has a nice graphic quality to it.

  16. I love the Hopscotch pattern by Camille. It's jelly roll friendly and looks like it will go together quickly. I've contemplated on making this quilt for myself....

  17. I love the blue and white combination. There is a lovely one in Cotton Candy Quilts called Grandmother's Flower Garden I think - that has lots of small squares, which I love.
