Stash Project: Birthday Banner

Since the all-important first birthday is fast approaching, we've put together a few party tutorials as we prepare to celebrate.  Since Silas picked out some Castle Peeps fabric a couple of months ago, we've decided to do a castle theme birthday for him.  Here are some easy directions to make a birthday banner of your own!

You need:
  • 6 fat eighths {9" x 22"}
  • 1 yard solid fabric
  • 1/2 yard Heat n Bond Lite
  • Coordinating thread
First, trace the letters onto the paper side of the heat and bond {they should be backwards since they will be ironed on the wrong side of the fabric}.  Then iron them onto the wrong side of the fabric.  Then, cut out each letter.  Set aside.  {Note: I added an exclamation point to give both rows an odd number of letters}.

Cut two 8" by width of fabric strips from your solid fabric.  Along the top edge, starting at the outside, mark every 7".  Along the bottom edge, mark first at 3 1/2" and then every 7" after that.  Connect the lines with your ruler and cut.  Do the same with the printed fabric.  You need a total of 16 solid triangles and 16 printed triangles.

Pair each printed triangle with a solid and sew, right sides together, along the two long edges, leaving the top open.  Trim the points and turn right sides out.  Repeat with all triangles and arrange as desired.  Remove the paper backing from the letters and fuse to printed side of triangles.  Using  a blanket stitch, zigzag, or satin stitch, stitch the letters in place {if you don't want to stitch your letters you could use Heat n Bond Ultra}.

From the solid fabric cut four 2 1/2" by width of fabric strips for banner binding.  Sew the four strips into two strips and fold in half, press, then fold the raw edges in toward the fold and press {as for bias binding}.

Tuck the raw edges of the triangles into the folded binding, centering the seams on the "p" in Happy and the "h" in Birthday {if you've chosen to add an exclamation point, or between the "t" and "h" if not}.  Sew 1/8" from the edge of the binding.  To finish, add small button holes right outside each edge, with the remaining binding hanging down.

  1. Oh, that is clever!

    By the way you've inspired me to attempt another quilt. This one will be for my daughter when she moves into her toddler bed sometime this year. Fingers crossed that I actually finish it!

  3. What a great idea! My kids' birthdays just passed, but maybe I can work on this over the summer!

    I linked up a dress that I made from (mostly) my stash. I had gotten a half yard set of Tufted Tweets fabric, intending to save it for a quilt. I ended up making it into a dress instead (although I didn't have enough for the skirt so I had to buy a little extra).

    I noticed you have a sale in your shop, I've definitely been eyeing your patterns so I think I'm going to pick up something right now!
