Riding in Comfort

We finally upgraded to a convertible car seat {yay for infant car seats having such larger height and weight limits, we used ours for over a year!}, and while the little boy loves the ability to see out the window now, and not be so reclined, whenever he falls asleep his little head flops to one side and it just doesn't seem comfortable.

So I set out to get him a travel pillow like the ones adults use on airplanes. Not finding what I was looking for, I decided to make one instead.  I printed the pattern from here, and then added about a quarter of an inch to the rounded edge, and to the length of the neck {I didn't add the stuffed animal because, while it may be great for an older child, it seemed like a health hazard for a 15-month-old}.

I used about a fat quarter for the top, and then, since I spliced the back, I was able to use only about a fat eighth. I stuffed it with batting, not too firm, and maybe could have left a little bit out from behind the neck.

He's already used it on a two-hour drive, and it seems to have done the trick quite well {oh, and he can't stop hugging it, if he gets a hold of it otherwise}.  I wish I had a photo of him in the car, but with the rear-facing seat, it just didn't turn out!  But, if you're going to take your little one on a long trip and have some extra fabric, this is a must have make.

Do you have any tips for traveling long distance with a small child?

  1. People laugh when they see the inside of my minivan. Two car seats and two booster seats. We won't be flying for a while because of the hassle of getting to our destination and needing four car seats on the other side that take an advanced degree in engineering to install. Where is that dog fabric from? I'm just starting to sew for my one and only boy and can't find any cute fabric...........

  2. @Greta The fabric is Sherbet Pips by Aneela Hoey for Moda. Finding boy fabric is difficult, I always snatch up a lot when I find a good one!

  3. This is a cute picture! The little pillow turned out so adorable I think the Sherbet Pips is just perfect for it.

  4. Tips for traveling long distance with a child....avoid at all costs. Does that count? :-) This is cute; the one I have for my daughter is store bought, but not an animal, and I think was intended for infants. We only used it once or twice anyway, but if I had made one this cute, I might have used it more!
