Sewing With Children {Help Needed!}

I'm just stopping by today to ask for some advice!  A friend of mine, who does not sew or quilt, has an almost-7-year-old who is excited to learn sewing and quilting.  The little girl's birthday is coming up soon, so her mother is gathering sewing supplies and looking for how-to sewing books.  For now, her daughter will be hand sewing only

She has asked me if I know anything about either of the books above, sadly, I do not {though they seem to have great reviews!}, so I'm wondering, do any of you?  Or, do you have any other books you might recommend for this young lady?  Any thoughts/advice would be much appreciated!  Thank you in advance!

  1. I've been looking for books for my daughter (7yrs) but more on the machine sewing side. Fiona at the Sewing Directory in the UK recommended Sewing School: 24 Sewing Projects Kids Will Love to Make by Amie Plumley and Andria Lisle. Alison McNicol has also written a number of sewing and craft books for children, I think they are available in the US. I hope that helps, would love to hear how she gets on.

  2. Here are a few that I'd recommend...
    *Sewing Fun for Kids: Patchwork, Gifts and More (C&T Publishing)
    *Kids Can Quilt (Heather Willms and Elissa Willms/Hopscotch Quilt Shop)
    *Sew with Sara (C&T Publishing)
    *Sewing School: 21 Sewing Projects Kids Will Love to Make (Storey Publishing)

    Yay for teaching kids to sew!

  3. I could not pass up commenting on this post. Makes my heart feel good to know little ones are interested in sewing and in hand sewing. :) My 84-year-old Mother still hand pieces and quilts as do I. My grand daughters, Elizabeth, 11-years-old and Lyndsey, 7-years-old, are wanting to learn, too. Love it!!!

  4. I'm in the same boat... looking for summer sewing projects for girls ages 5-11, that involve simple directions and yet a 'cool' outcome :) I like the felt flowers with a button sewn to the middle. It would work for a barrette or pony tail holder.

  5. I'd suggest buying (or making) some little sewing cards to practice different stitches with yarn. They may be a little "young" but it's a good way to practice stitches on a larger scale.

  6. Hello Jennie...I don't know either of these books but they both look wonderful and and appealing. Isn't it heart warming to know that little ones today want to learn to sew and quilt at such a young age!
    Hope you have a lovely weekend,

    P.S I love the cover of 'See and Sew'!

  11. The best book I've come by is called "Sewing School." My husband got it for me for Christmas and it is perfect for a little girl learning to sew. Your friend won't be disappointed.
