Garden Steps :: A Note about Layout

Questions? Missed a post? Find the index here.

Before we get started on the first embroidery this week, I wanted to write a quick note about layout. While you do not have to complete all of the blocks before you start stitching, I recommend you chose a layout before you begin the embroideries.  The simple reason is that it will determine which direction the block must face for all the embroideries to be right side up.

Therefore, it might be helpful to finish several, if not all of the blocks before determining a layout.  Here are more details:

When you've assembled all your blocks, you will have six blocks of each of the following arrangements:

You will note that one group of blocks has one color in the longer strips and the other group the opposite color.  As a result, here are the two layouts I see for the quilt {if you have other ideas, feel free to try them out!}:

Personally, my favorite is the layout on the right, so I will be stitching my blocks with longer set of strips on the top.  Do you have a favorite?

  1. I like the one on the right, too.

  2. I like the one on the right the best. However, if you used yellow and greys the one on the left would looke like paper lanterns and that would be very cool.

  3. Good point here that I hadn't even considered! I'm going with the right, too. My material has arrive and the cutting begins tonight.

  5. Well, I am in trouble now...just found you by way of Carrie over at A Passion For Applique. I love anything with a log cabin based design and gardening is my other joy...combine these two elements as you have and look out. In way over my head with other projects in the works, but I want to do this Quilt Along...I might fall far behind but it will get finished eventually - thank you for all the hard work that goes into setting this up. Off to check out what fat 1/4's I have on hand. Will be fun using the perle cotton for embroidery too - not familiar with that particular type.

    Love your blog!
