Happy Week! {Giveaway!}

Comments closed, winner is Fiona!

It's that time of year again {I'm getting older, 29 this year!}, and I thought it was about time to have a little giveaway too.  Last year I asked for favorite birthday memories, and I was blown away by the responses.  Some had me laughing out loud {literally} and a few brought me to tears.

So, this year, I'd love to hear your funniest birthday memories.  Leave a comment and next week I'll draw a winner for this little bundle of Sandi Henderson's Secret Garden {and maybe a few more goodies}.

Oh, and if you're a follower, leave a second comment for a bonus entry.  {And if anyone knows how to add numbers back to my comments, that would be much appreciated!}

I'll draw a winner Monday,  April 2nd.  Good luck!

  1. We always let our kids enjoy cake for the first time on their first birthday - one of them barely touched it and threw it on the floor, two of them just made a big mess pigging out on it, and one of them decided to dump the ice cream cake on top of her head and let it melt there.

These are the instructions I used to number my comments:

  2. When I was little I hid under the table when everyone sang Happy Birthday because I was sooooo super shy...To this day I get embarrassed and don't like the attention on me! Thanks for the giveaway, I love reading your blog!

Hope you have a happy birthday!

  3. Hey, that makes us the same age! Except only for 6 months because I enter the 3's in November.

Funny... I think that would be watching the kids at my daughter's 3rd birthday try and crack the home made pinata. I think I layered that baby a bit much for little girls. Lucky we had some 5 year old boys there and eventually the got it. I had put their party favour bags inside so they were pretty pleased to see it opened LOL

  4. I'm a follower...new one from Linky/GFC too! I'm gonna be the odd ball here and tell you after getting up there where I am in age, I tend to forget, so I stopped celebrating on that account, but when I'm talking with hubster and it would be left up to him, he'd say he forgot 'bout it just after I left the womb...silly man! Hahaha!

Hope you have a Happy B'day youngun'!

  6. I don't remember how old I was, but I remember getting a lovely outfit for my birthday. We were going to my grandparent's for cake and icecream and I innocently asked if 'I could wear my birthday suit'. Too young to know why everyone was laughing at me, I locked myself in the bathroom - my dad had to remove the door to get me out. Needless to say it was a long time before I found any humor in that phrase or would celebrate my birthday.

  8. I don't really remember this, but my favorite childhood picture was my brother's 4th birthday. He got a Cookie Monster cake and we are both covered in blue frosting.

  9. I don't know if it is a funny memory but I got engaged on my 21st birthday. We have been married almost 28 years.

  11. my surprise birthday party for my 7th birthday at church! one of my friend's brothers wanted to hide in the garbage can and surprise me, but the parents said no!

  12. Ah, 29! I've turned 29 about 14 times now! When I turned 40 I was opening my gift from my hubby and there was what looked like a checkbook in the bag. I was thinking, "why in the world did he get me a checkbook cover?" Then I realized there were tickets to Mamma Mia in it, but I didn't recognize the name of the theater, Winter Garden. I asked where the theater was (we live near Atlanta) and he said to keep looking. There were tickets to NY and we got to go eat at Tavern on the Green! I was stunned! Greatest birthday ever!

  13. My funniest birthday memories are my son's first birthdays and the pictures of them putting their hand in the cake. Always brings a smile to my face.

  14. Oh boy, I don't know that I have funny birthday memories. I have a lot of "that's awful" birthday memories... but this year I'm looking forward to seeing one of my favorite bands in concert on the day before my birthday and then getting their first new CD in 9 years on the day AFTER my birthday! Hooray! :)

  17. i always had fun bc my birthday is Halloween, which meant twice as much candy. but funny? well, I'll never forget the year I ate too much candy. first there was a school party, then trick or treating, and finally cake. it was too much for 7 year old me. so moments after wolfing down my cake I ran towards the bathroom. .. and left a trail. my sister had missed it and started yelling about the "pumpkin squish" on the floor. my mom heard the yelling and came running... and walked right through it! if took a few years, but it makes us all laugh now :o)

  19. I have plenty of birthday memories, I don't think they're funny but I enjoy them! On my 40th birthday I went to see Bob Dylan in concert (even though I still don't think the man can sing, it was an awesome show!) and on my 50th birthday my mom & sister had a proper English tea party for me. 7 different kinds of tea sandwiches, pots of tea, and I wore a gold crown all day. I'm sure I looked a fool but I had a lot of fun!

  30. Many good birthday memories but one stands outs the birthday party for my son when he was four. He was off to the side crying (something he rarely did) because the party wasn't going his way. I remember not really knowing what to do about it. That was 14 yrs ago. He has no memory of this at all! Thanks for giveaway.

  31. It's my birthday weekend, too! I think my funniest birthday memory was when I woke up to find a clothesline had been installed on my front yard, and was filled with size G- and H-cup bras, all shellacked and stiff as a board. Luckily my friend's birthday was the very next day, so the clothesline "mysteriously" moved to her front yard! Thanks for the opportunity!

  32. Happy Birthday!! I'm having so much fun on my birthdays... The unforgettable one will be on my 21st where I celebrate with my housemates(I'm study at university) until morning. We were playing cards game, singing and dancing... :)

    ReplyDelete
  33. This memory wasn't really funny for me but it was for everyone else. My birthday is in the summer and we were often on family vacation during that time. This particular year, I think it was when I turned 16, we were with extended family at some cabins and early in the morning on my birthday lots of my relatives came into the room where I was sleeping and threw balloons all over and jumped on me and sang happy birthday. At the time I was not impressed, but now it's a pretty funny memory!

    ReplyDelete
  34. Happy Birthday! The only funny birthday memory I can think of is when we used a candle that wouldn't go out for my son one year. It was fun watching him trying to blow out the candle and not understanding why the flame wouldnt stay out.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I don't really have a funny birthday memory, but my best birthday memory was the year I turned 24, Scott proposed to me on my birthday. It was great.

  36. on my 16th birthday my sister gave me a cute bra and panty set. My grandma was their and she took the bra and pulled up her shirt and put it over her bra and said this would not cover even one of my t#$@%S. this was in front of all my friends. I was mortified!!

  37. I will never forget the year my family wanted to give me a surprise party... my parents took me with them to the hardware store for some errand to get me out of the house and I pitched a total tantrum (I was about 7?) because they would not buy me a flashlight. When I got home and everyone was there, I was still stomping mad... and burst into tears. And guess what one of my birthday gifts was????? :-) I still love flashlights to this day!

  38. On my 16th birthday, my mom gave everyone a piece of cake except me! I couldn't believe I didn't get any cake. Isn't the first piece supposed to go to the birthday girl?? Every year on my birthday I remind her about that cake. She tells me...I KNOW I KNOW...you didn't get cake. It's so much fun to tease her about it! FYI, I'm 37 now so I've been messing with her for years about that cake!

  39. O....my birthday memory is not a funny one but one I will never forget. About 15 years ago as I was driving home from work, a bear ran across the road and then following right behind him running down a hilly driveway were 2 dogs and I ran over the smaller one.....boo!! Thankfully the little pug was ok as I was driving very slowly after seeing the bear. Sad and scary, thankfully a night out for dinner and music helped to lift the sad mood. :-)

  40. Happy birthday! We had a big birthday party for my sweet little girl turned 1. All was well as we sang "Happy Birthday" to her... then I blew out her candle and she burst into tears! She was such a sensitive little thing, and I think she received quite a shock when the candle flame suddenly disappeared. I felt bad for her at the time but the memory makes me laugh!

  43. I have 4 siblings, my hubby has 9 - we are the oldest of both clans. When I turned 50 our families informed hubby they wanted to have a surprise BD party for me. Of course, he told me because he knew I would never forgive him as I DID NOT want to have a party. So I called a few up & told them - NO PAARTY. They were mad. So the week of my birthday I received 22 rolls of toilet paper - one at a time. Each had a note attached like "Party Pooper," "To My S_i_t_y Sister-in Law," "Poop on You", etc!!! We laughed our selves silly - best birthday ever!!!

  46. Hard to explain my funniest birthday (at least in recent memory). Last year was my 50th, and to celebrate, I went on a mission trip with my church to Cabo San Lucas. On our free day we went on a whale watching boat. Some 80's music came on, and I decided to dance as if nobody was watching. But of course, they were, and one of the staff came and started dancing with me. 30 and handsome. All the others in my group were snickering.

  47. Funniest birthday memory was surprise 40th party I gave for my husband. A friend owns a nursing home. So we strapped him into a wheel chair & had plenty of accessories (adult diapers, etc). Lovely fabric@@

  50. Funniest birthday memory really stumps me. I guess one would be when I was little and had a birthday party, the decoratins were hearts since it was near Valentine's day. Well, our basement was decorated with "thousands" of hearts and one of the games was to guess how many hearts and one person guessed EXACTLY the number of hears and I just could't believe that

    ReplyDelete
  51. My birthdays were full of happiness because in the "olden" days, Mom wrapped coins in waxed paper and slid hem into the cake. So you were the lucky one if your slice had some money in it! Guess ths isn't funny, but it was a lot of "fun",

    ReplyDelete
  52. The funniest birthday I can remember was my 18th - my first year in University, and my mom dragged me away from my books to go for supper (midterms were the following week). We came home to a surprise party and I was so MAD, lol, because that was my slotted time for studying for my Latin class. Thankfully for my kids, I'm way less tightly wound now, lol.

  57. Maybe not the funniest, but the most fun Birthday memory. It was my brothers 4th Birthday, so I was 5. There was a blizzard the day before and the snow had drifted so high in front of our house that we got to go sledding starting on the roof! His Birthday is April 1st.

    Happy Birthday!

  58. This is kind of gross, but some of my friends and I went to this carnival that was opening a new mall. We rode a lot of rides and I can't remember which ride is was, but when I got off it had made me sick and all of my cake and ice cream came back up. They thought it was the funniest thing and I was totally embarrassed.

  60. I hope you have a lovely birthday. I would follow you but I don't know how. I'm new to this blogging thing.

My funniest birthday memory was my 16 th. It was a pool party. My brother and his mates caught some eels in the dam and threw then in the pool while we were having cake. We had quite a surprise when we all jumped back in the pool to find 4 eels swimming with us. It was scary at he time but now I look back and laugh. The boys caught the eels and threw them over the fence. The next morning they were back in the pool. Freaky.

  63. The time my husband made a poster from my baby picture with the caption, "Guess Who's 40?" and hung it at the front door of my office on my birthday. It was pay back for my mischief on his birthday.

  64. birthday greetings! last saturday, st patrick's day, was my 70something b-day and, of course, i had a houseful. at one point, i mentioned i was wearing my b-day sox and showed off my shamrock sox and said i wore them every year on this day for the last 30 years since my sis gave them to me. my sis, with a straight face, asked if i washed them every year. then the old fogies and geezers jokes rolled out ... fun and funny!

  65. Birthdays come and go, all too fast!

  66. Happy birthday! My funniest birthday memory is a toss-up between the surprise 16th bday party my best friend through for me, where she hung my bras all over my bedroom and then we went and did the wild and crazy thing of watching Jurassic Park at the theater (I know, showing my age AND my adventurousness!); and my 18th bday where I was in Canada with a friend and the rest of our group of friends drove up to surprise me for my bday and ran into us while we were out on a walk and instead of surprising me right there, they slammed on the breaks and backed up the entire length of the street to get away! Ah to be so young again! Hope your birthday week is great!

  67. Happy Birthday! May your birthday blessed with good wishes. I can't remember any funniest moment, I usually celebrate with my family and we just had a simple dinner. I'm special that day and I don't required to clean the dishes. That's it.

We had the greatest time together and in the extra facilities the parc had, like a huge swimmingpool and playgarden.

  76. Happy birthday! I hope you have a fantastic day. When I was little, the fair was always in town around my birthday. So we always got to go. I always chose the farris wheel.... and my sisters ALWAYS moaned and screamed on it, as they didn't like it!! LOL

  82. I am old enough to remember when hula hoops first came out. Our cousins from Canada arrived at our house in Mass. with one tied to the roof of their station wagon for me for my birthday. I took to it right away but my Mom tried and tried to get that hoop to go around her and never succeeded. The picture of her trying and us all laughing at her is still fresh in my mind.

My funniest birthday memory...well I'm not really sure. First off I am not a very good storyteller...I tend to ramble and get unfocused and off track a lot. And I have the worst memory on the planet!

  89. Happy Birthday!
My birthday the year I was in 3rd grade I missed the bus because I was in the bathroom... not so funny to a 3rd grader but my parents bought me a watch that year so I wouldn't miss the bus anymore.

  90. Ahhhhh! 4th times the charm! It keeps freezing so I cannot type anything or copy and paste anything, UGH!

Anyway, I'm a follower!!!! And I love your blog!! :)

To finish my other random comment... I don't have many funny stories from birthdays but I will share a few that I think are funny now! At the time maybe not so much....HA!
1st Birthday: despite all attempts to stop me, I burnt my finger on my cupcakes candle :( ruined the rest of the party for myself!
21st: to a typically not much of a dessert kind of girl this was funny. My boy friend (now husband) sent me 12 PINTS of Graeter's ice cream! Needless to say I didn't eat it all, and gave a lot away.
22nd: I was in the middle of student teaching and didn't really live near any friends, so I asked my roommate (who was more of a we know each other let's just live together type thing, not a friend type deal). Anyway I asked her to have dinner or go get a drink with me for my birthday. She said "No". Thats it. Nothing else! And didn't say anything the rest of the night....SO WEIRD!

So those are a few, I am sure I have others. Not super comical, but Funny nonetheless!

I hope you have a happy day :)

  91. Hmmm, I can't remember anything funny happening on anyone's birthday. So, I'll just say that last year's first birthday party for my grandson was the most memorable. It was at my house and the them was "Cat in the Hat." It was a lot of work, but a lot of fun! This year his birthday party will be "Super Why" from the PBS channel.

    ReplyDelete
  92. For my son's first bithday we had cupcakes with little paper tractor toppers I had made. He tried to eat the tractor instead of the cake.

    ReplyDelete
  93. My favorite birthday memory is my step-daughter Emily's 4th birthday. In her eyes it was huge. All day were comments like, "Look how fast I can run now that I'm 4!" and "Wow, look how high I can jump now that I'm 4!" "Look how big my feet are now that I'm 4!" We took her on a Toys R Us shopping day, and she'd ask "Is this for 4?" It was so so cute!

    ReplyDelete
  94. I'm now following you by RSS feed! Your site is so cute!

  95. I'm not sure about the funniest birthday memory! I remember going to a small school, and we'd go to every class (even the scary big people in high school :-o ) and hand out candy--only to our siblings and cousins, and then throwing a couple into the room for whoever would scramble on the floor to get it!

  96. There are a couple of background facts you need to know before I share my funny story: (a) My birthday falls around Thanksgiving every year so we generally celebrate when the family is all together at Thanksgiving (b) My family has had food fights all my life. OK...you are now up to speed. The year I turned about 30ish my grandmother (who has since passed away) bought me a cake at the grocery store. When she unboxed it and placed it on her hand and reached across the table to hand it to me I slapped her hand so as to make the cake hit her face. Well the cake was so dry it literally exploded into a bazillion pieces. I have never seen anything like it. We laughed so hard. There was no cake on my grandmother because it went everywhere. My mother found cake in the oddest places (like behind her curtains) for weeks. That story is told every year especially now that grandma is gone. I don't have to tell you that she swore she would never buy me another birthday cake ever again!!!

Happy Birthday my friend and thanks for a great giveaway.

  98. Like so many of the commenters above I have a hard time thinking of funny birthday memories - but here's one. When my granddaughter turned two she was into eating her cake, but the sugar reaction was extremely visible. I have a series of photos of her as she grows maniacal and then comes down from the sugar high - all over the course of about ten minutes. I was amazed at how much it affected her.

  100. Happy birthday! While not so much funny, but more fun, is that my boyfriend and I have started a tradition of surprising each other with trips for our birthdays.. We went to Naples for a weekend for his birthday, the Lake District for mine and we're going to the seaside soon! We've missed a few but we have so many to look forward to :)

  101. Hmm, I'm not sure I have a funny birthday memory....I guess once when I was really young at my birthday party someone made me laugh and I sprayed sugary pink soda all over everyone's desserts at the table, but that is more embarrassing and gross than funny...

    ReplyDelete
  102. I don't remember any funny stories from my own birthdays, but this year when my daughter turned two for about a week before her birthday she would wake up every morning and start singing "happy birthday" to herself in her crib. Then at her birthday party she made us sing to her 4 times so she could keep blowing out the candles.

I hope you have a great birthday!

    ReplyDelete
  103. My funniest birthday memory? I think it was my 8th birthday. My parents took me to Showtime Pizza Palace. They had those animatronic singing bears. Well, we ate our pizza and I went off to play some games. Apparently, while I was gone, the bears woke up and started singing Happy Birthday Lisa. I got back to the table just as they were finishing, and everyone seemed to think I should have been disappointed in missing it.

  108. Happy Birthday. There is so much fun celebrating a birthday when us moms have children. I really dont remeber any funny instances from my own birthdays, but when our daughter turned 6, we always celbrated with both sides of the family, she wound up with 5 "My Little Pony" sleeping bags. LOL not much communication went on. After that a lot of communication about who bought what.

  109. You know... I can't really remember too many birthdays. I guess they were all about the same growing up. I do remember one around the age of 6 or 7 that my mom took me and my friends to Burger King. We got to tour the restaurant and we all thought that was just so cool. I still remember them showing us the deep freeze and having us wrap up some hamburgers. :)

  114. When he was three years old, we threw my son a wonderful Winnie the Pooh Party. He, as a possessive preschooler, was so mad that his friends were touching his playthings that he had to spend almost the entire party inside the house. Funny now.... not then!

  115. I remember the first time I got those candles that keep lighting themselves up again no matter how much you blow... I was so tired and dizzy from blowing!

  119. Happy Birthday. The only kind of funny birthday I can remember is my daughter's birthday. Her brother's were spending the night with their grand mother, the day before Easter. They came home Easter morning to look for their baskets and their mother was gone. My daughter was born on Easter morning and Tax Day.

  120. My son's first birthday was early spring and it was nice enough to have the party outside. He was in bare feet and absolutely refused to put them down on the grass. A relative would pick him up and dangle him over the grass but he refused to put down his feet. We said he wasn't putting down "his landing gear". Thanks for the chance! Happy Birthday :)

  121. When I was young, having a birthday at the local McDonald's was the coolest of the cool things to do. I had 1, 2, 3 birthday parties at McDonald's!! At the last one, I asked my mom "Can I please just have a party at home next year? I don't want to go to McDonald's anymore!" (imagine that in a 9-yr-old whiny girl voice!)

  127. The most fun we had was my 9th birthday party. We had a huge stainless steel bowl, big enough for only one of us to sit in!! and my brother spun us around in our basement family room. Thinking about it now, I am amazed that not one of us got sick from all the spinning. It was a blast and I will never forget it!!

  131. Well, Happy Birthday! Now you're 29 just like, um, me!
My birthday memories are not so fun... until my girls came along. My birthday always fell on the first day of school. NOT fun! Now that I'm a mom however, well, I'm sure you can see how back to school time takes on a whole new meaning for me ;o) Hope you have a fantastic day!

My best birthday memory was thanks to my mother! She surprised me by telling me she was taking me to New York for my 21st! She let me choose the hotel and plan some random activities. We had an amazing time, jumping on tour buses. She surprised me further by taking me to see Wicked at the Gershwin theater!! I so want to go back to New York now!

  134. For my daughter's third birthday, she chose a lovely flower cake with a bee on it. It looked quite complicated so I tried to tempt her with another one, a beautiful, bright (and relatively easy!) duck cake. No, that would not do - it had to be the flower/bee cake. Great! So I did what I could, and then enlisted the help of a fellow Playcentre mum to make some huge super-thin petals, and then the final assembly stage was done at the party by two other mums (I got a little busy with a fishing game). A HUGE PROJECT involving many - but anything for my little angel! When the cake was brought out, we all sang happy birthday and then Little Miss was asked to make a wish before she blew out her candles. Hands over her eyes, voice loud and proud, she said "I wish I had a duck cake!!" That's my girl!!!

When I turned 47 my grandson (4) wondered why there were no candles on my cake. I told him there would be too many. So he said, "How old ARE you?"
When I said "47" his eyes grew wide and he said, "Wow. That is WAY OLD!!!"

  137. On my 40th birthday my daughter and husband threw a surprise party for me, I went to a auction to buy a sewing machine (imagine that) and wouldn't leave until I bought it.....went home and family and friends were waiting. I think I was the only one who thought it was funny!

  138. Happy, happy birthday. On my daughter's 4th birthday. I had made this lovely little raggedy ann cake, had everything all set for a sweet little birthday party with family and friends and decided to take a quick shower before our guests appeared. When I came back out to the kitchen, there was my sweet child with blue lips and fingers, not hardly a speck of frosting left on the cake and a tell-take stool next to the counter. "Did you eat some frosting, Marie!!!??" "No, Mama, I didn't do it..." was her reply with those big round brown eyes looking so innocently back at me. How could I not laugh! After all, it was her cake...

  141. We never had much money so birthday parties were not a often thing but one year my mom took me out to have a mommy daughter day just before my birthday. We went all over this huge mall (we were living in Germany at the time... not sure what word to use to describe it.) The toy store was amazing. It was not as big as the toy store in the movie big, but to me it really felt like it. Then my mom took me for food where we just sat and talked for a really long time. That was my favorite birthday. ^^

  143. My best birthday memory was the year I turned 40. My husband surprised me with a trip to Argentina with my girlfriend and she in turn surprised me with tickets to see U2 in concert in Buenos Aires. Amazing! I wish you lots of fun and fond birthday memories now and in the years to come!

  144. First off - happy birthday - hope it turns out great. One of my most fun birthdays was the year I turned 50 (I'm now 61). My best friend and I turned my house into a replica of the 60's (the decade that "I came off age in") and everyone showed up dressed from the 60's. I met everyone at the door in my granny dress (purchased from a garage sale) and a daisy from my yard and, of course, a piece sign with my hand. My next door neighbor showed up "pregnant" since - as she said - that was how she had spent the 60's. not only did we have great fondue but also such things as spam appetizers. A great time was had by all.

  146. Happy, Happy Birthday!! Hope you have a wonderful day. I don't really have any funny memories but here is one I remember. A few years ago I was talking on my phone and relaxing since I was home alone. After abit my call was disconnected! I was totally confused because my phone was saying something like "no service". I was like "oh no! Did I pay the bill?" I was going crazy when I heard the garage opening, oh good, family is home. I met my husband, daughter and son at the door and was just about ready to complain about my phone when I saw my kids had a new iPhone in their hands and were singing Happy Birthday. They had gone and got my phone and had the service switched right over. I was very happy and surprised.

  148. well, the funniest mhhh, I think it is when I was out for dinner with my friends and I waited to ask for a birthday cake (a pizza with chocolate) and when I did they told me it wasn't possible at that time ^^( so I missed my birthday cake

  149. I do not like surprises so I am pretty secretive about my birthday. One year we were out with friends, who knew, and we were talking about the silly things people do on their birthdays or for other's birthdays. I remarked how I would be so embarrassed if anyone put flamingos or cows or whatever on my lawn for all the neighbours to see. Imagine my horror when we reached home to find a bunch of cows all over our corner lot home!!

Thanks for the chance to win the fabulous fabric!

  150. My husband lost his mind on my 40th birthday. He wrapped up a fart machine and gave it to me. When I opened it up, he and my 4 children laughed hysterically. I was the only one not laughing-I was chucking it in the garbage. I just didn't want potty humor for one day in my life! We still laugh about his poor judgment that day. Everyone remembers that birthday that mom was mad.

  155. I grew up in the 1950s and only remember having one birthday party where the neighborhood kids were invited. My mom thought it would be fun to tie Tootsie Pops to string and then hid them up in the light fixture. Everyone wondered what prize could be at the end of the string. As we sat around the dining room table the time came to get our prize, everyone pulled at once, only to find out the candy had melted to the inside of the light fixture. We all thought it was funny as we attempted to pull the light fixture out of the ceiling. No special treats for us, a mess for mom to clean up, but a wonderful memory of my mom. On her 89th birthday I asked her if she wanted Tootsie Pops on a string and she said "NO Thanks".

  157. Happy Birthday. I don't really have any funny birthday memories. I don't think I've ever had a birthday party, even when I was a kid, though I do remember going to other kids' parties. If I had to come up with something it would be the year my husband thought my birthday was July 1st and not June 1st. Needless to say, he never made that mistake again.
