In the Meantime

**I will have the first embroidery for Garden Steps tomorrow...sorry for the delay, in the meantime...**

A few people have asked how I manage to get so much done with little ones, and about time management...well, let me tell you, I do not have any sort of method or plan going on over here.  However, my sewing area is in the family room, right next to the toys and I leave everything out {sewing and toys!}.  So, whenever I can, I sneak in five or ten minutes.

I'd like to say that I'm super productive during naptime, but that would be a lie...usually I surf the web, make myself lunch, and drink coffee while they sleep!  Sometimes I sneak in some sewing, but I think the sound of the machine wakes them up!

There are two real reasons I get so much done: my husband and my mom.

My husband because he plays with the kids when I'm sewing madly against a deadline {I'm a major procrastinator, or I work well under pressure - I prefer the latter because it sounds better!}.  He also helps clean on the weekends and doesn't mind eating the same old PB&J for lunch and quick, easy dinners.  I know, he's a keeper!

My mom because a lot of the pretty things you see here are made by her {especially the bags...while we design them together, she does the majority of the actual labor...and there are a few new ones that should be appearing soon!}.  We also work together on inspiration and ideas, so we've usually talked out most of the errors before the sewing begins!  And she's always there to be encouraging and to Skype with Silas when he's driving me crazy!

And, because every post needs a little eye candy, here are some new fabrics we've been working with:

The line is Preeti by Jessica Swift for Blend Fabrics.  We're newly working with Blend Fabrics, and it has been fun developing new designs with their fabrics!  These are my favorites:

  1. I can't wait to get my hands on that embroidery pattern! How fun!!! I grew up with a professional seamstress who worked from home. The humming sound of her industrial machine late into the night was very comforting. I always knew she was there and all was well with the world. My dad worked 4 to midnight, so she sewed until he got home. Your little ones might actually like the sound of your machine too :)
    Have a lovely day!!!

  2. I think we have the same husband ;o)
I painted a lot when my kids were really little... Emily's favorite thing was to take the paints and line them up inside the cupboards so she'd know exactly where they were when I needed them. She learned her colors very fast. And now she's an art lover.
And I think it's great that coffee is part of your 'you' time. Makes us more productive 'usses' doesn't it?

  3. A common theme with crafters seems to be a supportive spouse. Mine will drop me off at the fabric store and go do the grocery shopping. I think their moms trained them well.

  4. I've been seriously contemplating bringing my machine out to the living room. I'm tucked into a small room, and while Clara will sit in there with me sometimes, other times she gets mad and wants to play with more toys or bounce in her bouncer. Thanks for sharing. Nice to know I'm not the only deadline hugger!

  5. Just discovered your blog and love it. Purchased the purple fabric and looking forward to the embroidery pattern and making this quilt. Also this new line you are showing us looks absolutely beautiful. Anxious to see what you come up with. I also sew in the living room where it is open and TV is on for noise.

  6. I still haven't quite figured out how to really get some "me" time in, but I'm sure we'll get Elena's reflux under control soon. It's been a rough almost two months. Karina has gotten better about playing alone though, so at least that's one step in the right direction. Right now, I only get time in the evening after Karina's in bed and while my husband is taking care of the baby. I basically give up about an hour of sleep so I can watch tv and go online. I'm in awe of women like you who manage to do all that you do!
