the Ruby market tote: More Details

In case you're still on the fence about joining the Ruby market tote: Stitch & Quilt Along, I wanted to provide you with a few more details on the bag itself. My size inspiration was a medium sized paper bag I got at a market. It is a generous size, has room for everything, but isn't overly large {in my opinion}. Since it is a market tote, it seemed like it should be large enough to actually carry a small load of groceries. It measures about 17" tall, 10" wide, 6" deep, and the handles have an 8" drop. Here's a comparison photo:

The size ties can be tied tight or loose to adjust the bag to a slightly smaller size when in use {or just for a cute, decorative touch}.

The bag also features two large interior pockets, a small cell phone pocket, a key loop {you're welcome to add a metal key fob if you choose, I just prefer not to}, and a tie in the center. The tie can be used to keep the bag closed when in use or to compact it down when not in use. While it doesn't fold up tiny, it does fold small enough to bring along and not have to carry the entire bag until you're ready.

Just in case embroidery is not your thing, here's a picture of the back, and what the entire bag would look like without the front pocket:

And now to answer some of the questions from the original post.

Q: Can I use a charm pack instead of fat quarters?

A: Sure! You'll actually need two charm packs to complete the bag. Also, the size of the squares will require the charms to be cut down. I've used fat quarters for mine because they are available in nearly any fabric under the sun.  The bag will not use the entire fat quarter of each one, however, I'm working on a second project for the scraps, hopefully I can finish it {something along the lines of a free pattern for everyone who finishes the bag!}.

Q: Will there be size variations to the bag?

A: Right now there will not.  While I realize this bag is not necessarily the size everyone might want, I simply cannot alter the pattern, fabric requirements and put all the directions for that up right now, things are a little too hectic.  Thanks for understanding!

Q: Do I have to use Ruby to make the bag?

A: Nope!  You can use whatever fabric you choose.  We've partnered with Sew Lux Fabric to bring you the option of purchasing a kit if you choose to make the bag out of Ruby.  The thread samplers are also available to give you the option to try the threads out without investing in the entire set.  However, we'd love for you to participate regardless of what fabric and thread you choose.  Here's the fabric my mom and I are making a bag for my sister with {Secret Garden by Sandi Henderson for Michael Miller & Kona Dresden Blue solid}:

I think this answers all of the questions so far, but feel free to add yours or to e-mail me at jennie {at} cloverandviolet {dot} com. I will do my best to keep this post updated.

  1. I love your bag design with the ties and everything! The embroidery is also just simply stunning. I probably won't be joining in the stitch-along this time, but I WILL be making this bag in the future! :) Thanks so much for sharing it.

  2. I was already in and have placed an order for my fabric. But now I'm even more excited! Can't wait to get started on the bag. :)

  3. This is freaking adorable! I have too much to do at the moment...but am bookmarking for later. Love it!
