Growing Up

I've been collecting fabric again/still.  I'm joining this:

Orange / Aqua / Grey Mystery Charm Swap

and this:

Polka Dot Charm Swap

in an attempt to collect charms for a new quilt for Silas's bed {sign ups are open now! check it out! both swaps are full!}.  The color scheme is going to be lime, aqua, gray, and golden yellow.  I also might have ordered these, and some fat quarters of the color scheme of this, this, and this...and have made this pinboard for the Sew, Mama, Sew Fat Quarter Idol challenge...

Do you have any favorite prints I should consider?

Silas is about 2 1/4 and still, happily, sleeping in a crib. However, we're hoping to switch Norah to the crib sometime in the next few months. So, the plan is, make Silas a new quilt, then help him transition to the twin bed, in hopes that there is a little gap where the crib is empty, so he doesn't feel displaced.

If you have kids, how did you switch them to a regular bed?

  1. Just switch them! I don't make too much of a big deal. It's probably hardest with the first one, but just tell him that big boys sleep in big beds. I try to wait as long as possible to switch them to a big bed though, as keeping them in the bed can be a challenge.

  2. We started having Miss C. sleep on her crib mattress on the floor of her room when she was about 18 months old. A few months later we bought a big girl bed at Ikea and she transitioned beautifully into it. I also made her a quilt when she was 2 and that made her bed even more special. One thing that made it easier was sitting next to the bed while she fell asleep and keeping a little sleeping nook available in our room for when she needs to come into our room in the middle of the night. I'll be doing the same for my son soon. He's 2.5 and ready for his own big boy bed. :)

  3. You're right to have a gap time...that's what I did too. It wasn't bad, although my oldest [2 at the time] would climb into the crib when his brother came along and tear off the wallpaper border and lay it on his brother like a blanket. Needless to say, his brother loved it.

  4. That looks like another cool contest! Thanks for the mention! The swaps are both full.

When we transitioned Mae to her big girl bed, it was on vacation. Her crib was not an option, and she relished sleeping in a big girl bed, just like big sister. When we got home, she assumed she would be right back in her crib, so we stripped the sheets and dolls and such and made it less appealing. She had a big bed in her room all along, and I think she just thought of it as just another object in her room. She got a step stool for Christmas that was used to help her up into the bed and then everything seemed to click for her. Her crib was vacant, her big girl bed had her new step stool and all her dollies and blankets. Plus, it was just like sleeping in a big girl bed on vacation!

Good luck with Silas. I'm sure he will do great. Changing the bedding in the crib and giving it a few weeks to soak in should help with any jealousy.

  5. Check out the new line of fabric called Peak Hour by Riley Blake. It would make a perfect big boy quilt for a little guy.

We went from the crib to a toddler bed with each of our boys. It uses the same size matress as a crib but looks more like a real bed. They didn't have any trouble with the transition.

  6. Karina switched to her bed, gosh, I can't even remember how old she was. She got a toddler bed that was actually given to us. I think she was around 2 years old or so. Sometime around when she potty trained, I think. I made her a quilt, too! She is a very easy kid, so she didn't have any trouble transitioning. We talked about it, she got to play on the new bed as we disassembled the crib, and then put together the new one. One piece of advice, if you are able at this point: you might want to put the crib away for a while before putting Norah in it. Sometimes kids will become very attached to things like that and he might not like that she is sleeping in "his" bed. It could potentially make the transition harder, but you know him best, so feel him out and then go from there.

  7. My 17 month old grandson's name is Silas. I love the name and it's not all that common which is nice! I'm happy to say that I made in into both swaps!

  8. We moved our daughter to her big girl bed much the same as what you plan to do. We used a regular twin mattress and placed it on the floor to begin with. That way she would have far to fall if she rolled out. She loved her new bedding! Good luck!
