Embroidery 101: Block Six

Questions? Missed a post? Find the index here.

Block six is here already! Wow, I don't know about you, but to me this Stitch & Quilt Along is just flying by...or maybe it's because I got a little behind this last couple weeks...and literally just finished stitching my block {while watching the entire BBC mini-series of North & South on Netflix, and listening to Rhonda's latest Podcast...}.

Anyway, I tried to make this block a little simpler to allow anyone who has fallen behind {like me!} to catch up a bit {I know that a lot of people have also been extra busy because of school starting back too!}.  Download the PDF pattern here and the JPG image here.

Embroidery 101: Block Six

This block relies heavily on back stitch, but does also feature the Split Stitch and Coral Stitch from this week's tutorials.  I was going to make the basket pink, but apparently wasn't paying attention to my own stitching, and did it orange instead...I really wish I had thought to add brown to our color pallet.

For the flowers, I just back stitched circles and then added a French Knot to the centers, but you're welcome to make your flower bundle whatever you'd like! Also, I found it easiest to stitch the flowers first, before the running stitch in the picnic blanket.

I am also going to extend this linky {and the linky to block five!} so we can see everyone's beautiful work. And if you post a photo of all six blocks you'll be entered to win some new embroidery needles, a handmade needle case, and a little travel pouch...happy stitching!

Don't forget to show and tell in our Flickr Group! Blog about making your blocks? Share your post here {Note: You must link to a specific post about the QAL, otherwise your entry will be deleted.}:

  1. How cute...and I used those colors in my last embroidery...minus the yellow. =) I wonder how it will look this time.

One thing is that I should get it done quicker, now that the children are back to school.

    Thank you!

PS...I love North & South! Have you seen Wives & Daughters? it's another great one...or Under the Greenwood Tree? =) I have a little collection of period pieces that I enjoy.

  6. I've done embroidery since I was about 10 years old but since I am a newer quilter I've never thought before about adding stitching to my quilts. A new plan for doing that will have to be in the works now. Thanks for the idea.

  16. I like to embroider I just don't know how to do all the stiches. I am going to have to go back and read all your tutorials and try one of your designs. I have an embroidery machine and do all my quilt labels with it but have not done much other than tea towels.

  21. I'm sold on embroidery. Been doing some handwork lately and I'm really finding it relaxing. Love your designs.

I'm thinking of using embroidery on a baby quilt and a wine bag. I can so see some french knots as grapes :-)

  28. I have block #5 & #6 finished and on my blog - could only get one to the linky. They are both posted in the flicker group, too. They were completed while our valley was flooded by Irene - gave me comfort in the stitches while waiting to see what would be left.
